5 Tips for Teaching Sentence Writing to Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd Grade Students

1

Model frequently.

True modeling is “show and tell:” students’ job is to listen quietly, not participate yet. Talk students through how you plan a sentence. Modeling should be brief but to the point, and it should happen during most - if not all - of your writing lessons.

2

Don’t overrely on sentence frames.

Build students’ confidence so that they can come up with and write a complete sentence on their own. Keep in mind that only giving students “fill-in-the-blank” sentences may lead some kids to believe they can't write a complete sentence on their own.

3

Give a simple explanation of the parts of a complete sentence.

You might say that a sentence is about a “who or what” (someone or something), and it tells something about that “who or what” (with a verb).

4

Get students in the habit of rereading their sentence each time they finish writing a word.

Younger students often lose track of their sentences midway through. Rereading every time they finish a word helps them stay on track. Students who are older or write more quickly can wait until they finish their entire sentence before rereading.

5

Practice with a mix of teacher-created and student-created sentences.

Students should have many opportunities to come up with and write their own sentences. However, sentence dictation is also very helpful. In a dictation, you’ll give students a sentence to write that contains only phonics skills and high frequency words that they’ve been taught. Immediately after students finish writing the sentence, provide feedback so students can make corrections.

"I’ve been to several of her virtual classes. I teach first grade, and I think they’re absolutely awesome. I have been teaching for 37 years, but every time I watch her it helps me refresh and review what we’re teaching and how all of this works together."
