Description

Make phonological awareness FUN for your students with these engaging phonological awareness centers! This pack covers tons of phonological awareness skills, including rhyming, syllables, initial sounds, onset and rime, ending sounds, short and long vowel sounds, digraphs, consonant blends, glued sounds, r-controlled vowels, diphthongs, and segmenting and blending.

Many phonological awareness activities are teacher-led listening and speaking drills. These types of activities are important, but we also want our students to continue practicing on their own, even when you’re not with them!

This is where these phonological awareness centers come in. After you work on a skill through listening and speaking (like isolating initial sounds, for example), then students can continue practicing independently with these engaging games and activities.

These phonological awareness centers include a variety of activity options for each skill, including: cut-and-paste picture sorts, hands-on sorts, puzzles, clip cards, board games, memory games, worksheets and more. Whether you need something no-prep or hands-on, a partner game or a solo game, this pack has you covered!

A wide range of skills is covered in this pack of 124 phonological awareness centers:

  • Rhyming
  • Syllable blending and segmenting
  • Matching and isolating initial sounds
  • Onset and rime
  • Matching and isolating ending sounds
  • Matching and isolating middle short vowel sounds
  • Matching and isolating initial digraph sounds
  • Matching and isolating ending digraph sounds
  • Matching initial and ending consonant blends
  • Matching glued sounds
  • Matching and isolating long vowel sounds
  • Matching r-controlled vowels
  • Matching and isolating diphthongs
  • Segmenting and blending (CVC words, words with digraphs, words with blends, words with glued sounds, words with long vowels, words with r-controlled vowels, words with diphthongs)

You can easily match activities to your existing phonological awareness and phonics program - they don’t need to be used in a particular order!

Only pictures are used in the activities, so students are building these foundational skills, without any reading or writing required.

FAQ

My file isn’t printing correctly. How do I fix this?

The vast majority of printing problems can be fixed with the “Print as Image” solution in Adobe Reader! Learn more about how to do that here HERE.

Where can I learn more about your literacy products and how to use them?

We have a free catalog that walks you through my main resources. It can help you decide which resources are right for you and your students! You can grab the catalog HERE.

I teach in a split-grade class (i.e. 1st and 2nd). How should I select products for my students?

Alison always recommends getting the lower of the two grade levels. So if you teach in a 1st and 2nd grade class, get a 1st grade version. You can always differentiate in small groups or 1:1 to challenge your more advanced students!

I teach in Canada and am looking to buy some of your literacy products. How does the Canadian curriculum align to the U.S. curriculum?

Our Canadian customers tell us that it’s best to purchase one grade level down. If you teach first grade, for example, try a Kindergarten product. You can also check the preview file of any resource in our TpT store to see example lessons to help you make your decision!

These games are great! I love that there is an assessment with it so I can really see what skills my students need more practice with. Once they learn the games they are able to do them independently as well.

I used this resource when a couple of my students picked decoding multisyllabic words as their goal. This really allowed them to work on their goal independently! I loved that they were able to own their learning.

My students love these games for small groups, and once some of them are able to play them independently, they are able to teach others! Great academic skill review that is fun for them!
