Description

Do you have students who need extra help to master consonant blends and glued sounds? This Blends and Glued Sounds Intervention Pack makes it easy (and fun!) to get your students up-to-speed with reading and spelling words that have beginning or ending consonant blends and glued sounds. The blends and sounds covered in this intervention resource include:

  • Initial s-blends
  • Initial l-blends
  • Initial r-blends
  • Ending blends (s-blends, l-blends, t-blends, mp, nd)
  • 3-letter blends & digraph blends (shr, scr, spl, str, thr)
  • Glued sounds with -ng and -nk

Time to implement interventions is often limited, so this resource is:

  • No-prep: just print and place student pages in binders, or staple packets together
  • Flexible: you can decide how many activities to complete per day based upon how much time you have
  • Structured and consistent: when students know what to expect, intervention time goes more quickly and smoothly
  • Data-driven: assessments are provided after instruction on each double final consonant, so you’ll know when students need further practice or when you can move on

To begin using the Blends and Glued Sounds Consonants Intervention Pack, you’ll print out the teacher manual pages or plan to access them digitally. You’ll also print the student pages and place them into binders with page protectors, or you’ll staple packets together for the students. The only other materials you’ll need are writing utensils, dice, and counters.

In each intervention session, you can choose how many total activities students complete (it’s easy to stop and resume practice another day). The teacher manual will tell you exactly what to do and say. For some of the activities, you can get students started and then attend to another task or provide individual support while the rest of the students continue working.

For each set of blends or glued sounds, students will practice:

  • Working with the sounds in words
  • Blending to read short vowel words with the target consonant blend
  • Using magnetic letters or paper letter tiles to build words with the target set of consonant blends or glued sounds
  • Reading real and nonsense words with the target set
  • Reading sentences containing words with the target set and simple high frequency words
  • Reading and answering questions about a decodable passage for the target set of consonant blends or glued sounds

Phonological awareness practice is embedded in the practice activities (however, the primary emphasis is on having students read and write words with double final consonants).

In addition to these routines provided for each consonant blend or glued sound, there are bonus games and activities to extend students’ practice.

You can follow the order of the packet for a suggested sequence, or you can easily cover the skills out of order if you prefer.

FAQ

My file isn’t printing correctly. How do I fix this?

The vast majority of printing problems can be fixed with the “Print as Image” solution in Adobe Reader! Learn more about how to do that here HERE.

Where can I learn more about your literacy products and how to use them?

We have a free catalog that walks you through my main resources. It can help you decide which resources are right for you and your students! You can grab the catalog HERE.

I teach in a split-grade class (i.e. 1st and 2nd). How should I select products for my students?

Alison always recommends getting the lower of the two grade levels. So if you teach in a 1st and 2nd grade class, get a 1st grade version. You can always differentiate in small groups or 1:1 to challenge your more advanced students!

I teach in Canada and am looking to buy some of your literacy products. How does the Canadian curriculum align to the U.S. curriculum?

Our Canadian customers tell us that it’s best to purchase one grade level down. If you teach first grade, for example, try a Kindergarten product. You can also check the preview file of any resource in our TpT store to see example lessons to help you make your decision!

These games are great! I love that there is an assessment with it so I can really see what skills my students need more practice with. Once they learn the games they are able to do them independently as well.

I used this resource when a couple of my students picked decoding multisyllabic words as their goal. This really allowed them to work on their goal independently! I loved that they were able to own their learning.

My students love these games for small groups, and once some of them are able to play them independently, they are able to teach others! Great academic skill review that is fun for them!
