This reading response resource for Kindergarten includes lesson plans, printable activities for all year long, and kid-friendly directions!

This resource provides an organized system for managing a reading response center. The materials will help you teach independence AND engage your Kindergarten students in meaningful reading response activities like:
- Drawing and writing to answer simple comprehension questions
- Creating book reviews and recommendations to share with their peers
- Making flip books to demonstrate comprehension of beginning/middle/end, characters and setting, problem and solution, and new learning

These materials are very flexible and can be used many different ways -- as independent work, in centers (reading response center, writing center, or as part of D5), or as whole-class activities.

Students do NOT have to know how to read or write traditionally in order to be successful with these activities!

This resource is for you if you want to:
- Have students respond to texts in a variety of meaningful, Kindergarten-appropriate ways
- Help students REMEMBER what they should be drawing/writing about with instructions videos that read them the prompt and an example response
- Get students excited about books and independent reading by having them recommend books to each other
- Easily differentiate activities to meet a range of needs
- Give your students kid-friendly directions so they don’t forget how to do each activity
- Get organized with a schedule for introducing materials throughout the year
- Stop spending hours searching for reading response activities - and have everything you need in one place!

This resource may not be for you if:
- You are looking for general writing center activities that do not include reading response (you can find writing center materials HERE)

Here’s what’s included:
- 9 lesson plans to teach procedures and routines for responding to texts through drawing and writing
- An editable schedule you can use to plan your reading response activities throughout the year
- Planning and writing tools (sentence starters to help students plan their work with a partner, vocabulary poster for writing about text, and reading response checklist)
- Printable reading response activities, the majority of which require little to no prep (see the list below for more details)
- 164 total pages of materials (carefully organized into separate, smaller files, with an instructions video and photos)

All of the following activities include introductory lesson plans and kid-friendly directions:
- 12 different prompt sheets (+ versions with sentence starters + example responses + a video for each prompt that reads students the prompt and an example response)
- 8 different options for book reviews/recommendations (+ an example for each one)
- 4 different reading response flip books (beginning/middle/end + characters/setting + problem/solution + facts learned)

If you’d like to incorporate technology, digital templates and instructions for the prompts and book reviews/recommendations are included.

As a first year Kindergarten teacher, I was in a panic trying to figure out how to teach the foundations of reading. This club saved my sanity. Not only did I get structured plans but the advice and knowledge of how to apply it all and create my own lessons in the future. This club let me learn with others and improve myself as a teacher. Truly a blessing.

These games are great! I love that there is an assessment with it so I can really see what skills my students need more practice with. Once they learn the games they are able to do them independently as well.

The 1st & 2nd Grade Literacy Club is the perfect supplement for any teacher to up their literacy instruction. My students love the leveled monthly passages, and I love catching up on the recorded ones available through the website. I have used the Intervention Central resources to differentiate for individual students and small groups. I really can't say enough about the amazing resources and like-minded community!

FAQ

My file isn’t printing correctly. How do I fix this?

The vast majority of printing problems can be fixed with the “Print as Image” solution in Adobe Reader! Learn more about how to do that here HERE.

Where can I learn more about your literacy products and how to use them?

We have a free catalog that walks you through my main resources. It can help you decide which resources are right for you and your students! You can grab the catalog HERE.

I teach in a split-grade class (i.e. 1st and 2nd). How should I select products for my students?

Alison always recommends getting the lower of the two grade levels. So if you teach in a 1st and 2nd grade class, get a 1st grade version. You can always differentiate in small groups or 1:1 to challenge your more advanced students!

I teach in Canada and am looking to buy some of your literacy products. How does the Canadian curriculum align to the U.S. curriculum?

Our Canadian customers tell us that it’s best to purchase one grade level down. If you teach first grade, for example, try a Kindergarten product. You can also check the preview file of any resource in our TpT store to see example lessons to help you make your decision!
