This is a set of 45 nonsense word games for Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade students. These activities will help your students soar with their phonics development and reading fluency! (Plus, if you assess students on nonsense word reading, this is a great way to help increase their scores.)

Nonsense word practice is an essential - but often forgotten! - component of phonics instruction. It’s incredibly valuable because it requires kids to use their phonics knowledge to decode.

Here’s what I mean:

If you have a word like “flat,” some students will say the sounds and blend: /f/ /l/ /a/ /t/, flat. But some kids will be able to read the word instantly, because they’ve seen it before.

Instantly recognizing a word isn’t a bad thing - we want our kids to become fluent readers. However, if kids are over-relying on memorization and don’t have strong phonics / decoding skills, what happens when they encounter a new word? Well, they’re probably going to struggle with it!

That’s why our students need opportunities to practice reading nonsense words - they likely won’t have seen these words before, so they’ll be required to apply their phonics and decoding skills!

Not to mention - kids love reading nonsense words and how silly they sound! It’s a win-win for you and your students.
