This reading comprehension strategies unit is designed to teach students about using text features and illustrations. You will work with both literature and informational text in the unit. The lessons use real literature, and you can select books from a list of many different suggestions.
Through mini-lessons that gradually release responsibility, your students will learn to:

- Observe how illustrators use color, line, and other features to convey ideas
- Name important text features in nonfiction texts
- Use text features to find information
- Use electronic text features to do simple research online
This unit contains:
- 11 clear mini-lessons that will last for about 2.5 weeks
- Printable posters and visual aids (including a complete set of text features posters)
- Graphic organizers to go with the lesson plans
- Tips for setting up the reading workshop and conferring with students
- Planning and organization templates
- Common Core alignment and clear goals
- Checklists and rubrics
- Differentiation materials for Kindergarten and first grade
- List of suggested texts for use with the unit (you can use the books you already have in your classroom - the lessons do not require that you use one specific text)
