Second Grade Opinion Writing Lessons {2nd Grade Writing Workshop Unit 7}

This 4 week nonfiction / informational writing unit will help you teach your second grade students how to write opinion pieces, engage in mini debates, and create book reviews / awards.
The lessons begin by having students write opinion pieces about hot topics such as, “Should schools require uniforms?” They will engage in a simple “debate” to wrap up this part of the unit. Then, students will write book reviews and give awards for categories such as “Wonderful Word Choice.”
This unit is designed to be taught toward the end of the year.
In this unit, students will learn how to:
- Plan and write persuasive pieces
- Craft engaging introductions and conclusions for their pieces
- Provide background information on the topic that they are writing about
- Give reasons to support an opinion, and expand upon those reasons with more details and examples
- Use evidence from the text to support an opinion, when writing about a book
- Separate ideas by using different paragraphs
- Include descriptions and adjectives in their writing
- Use transition words
- Combine sentences and vary sentence beginnings
- Follow writing conventions
- Revise and edit their work independently and with a partner
This unit includes:
- 19 detailed minilessons that will last about 4 weeks
- Daily language arts/grammar exercises that complement the minilessons

- Posters, visual aids, and materials to go with the minilessons (all color materials also have black and white versions included)
