This sentence writing mini-unit for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade will get your students writing complete, correct sentences! Choose the lessons that best address your students’ needs - there are options for complete beginners as well as for students who are ready to take their sentence writing to the next level. You can easily fit these 15-20 minute sentence writing lessons into whole or small group writing time. This mini-unit could be used toward the beginning of the year OR any time students need to improve their sentence writing.

Should I be teaching handwriting and spelling?
Yes! Handwriting and spelling skills support sentence writing. They are not covered in this unit, however, beyond a lesson on using invented/phonetic spelling.
How often should students practice sentence writing?
It takes most children a while to fully master sentence writing. Daily or nearly daily practice is essential.
Is this a comprehensive writing unit?
The lessons in this unit will give students a great foundation in sentence writing. However, ongoing practice will be necessary, as well as practice with writing complete, multi-sentence texts. Check out the links below for additional writing resources that will last the entire school year.

I teach in a split-grade class (i.e. 1st and 2nd). How should I select products for my students?
Alison always recommends getting the lower of the two grade levels. So if you teach in a 1st and 2nd grade class, get a 1st grade version. You can always differentiate in small groups or 1:1 to challenge your more advanced students!
